JOERGER ENTERPRISES, INC. MODEL ADC1616 is a 16 channel scanning ADC with a resolution of 16 bits plus sign packaged in a single width CAMAC module. Great care is taken to insure this resolution. The input amplifier is an instrumentation type, the analog section is powered by tracking regulators, and a high accuracy voltage reference is used. The converter itself is an integrating type controlled by a crystal clock. The input multiplexers which take the 16 differential inputs are voltage protected. They can accept up to ± 35 volts without damage and even with the crate off, a common condition, they can accept up to ± 15 volts safely. As added protection, each signal and return input contains a series resistor. The module can be considered two parts, the analog section and the dataway control section. The analog section continuously scans the inputs, converts the analog input data to digital and stores it in a 16 word memory. Each data word contains 20 bits. Data is read out on 1-16, polarity on 17, overrange on 18, if the unit is in the single channel mode it is read on 19 and if the module is active, on 20. When data is read out it is taken from this data buffer memory. In this way data is always available immediately on demand. Logic is provided to insure that the read and write cycles into the memory never interfere. This logic is such that the system is not aware of these internal timing decisions and correct data is always available when requested. The number of channels to be scanned can be programmably controlled. If all 16 channels are not required the scan can be shortened to the first eight channels or the first four channels. It is also possible to select any individual channel and select feature eliminates the problem associated with scanning ADC’s. It makes it possible to obtain the low per channel cost of a scanning ADC but still have the ability when required to look at any one input at the maximum rate possible by the converter.
